On Tomas Hertl's Goal

All the talk in the league the last couple days has been about Tomas Hertl and his four goal performance against the Rangers. More specifically though people have talked about his fourth goal. I’m not even going to link you to a video of it because I’m sure you’ve all seen it a thousand times in various places.

Some people have taken offense to the goal, citing it as disrespectful and such, but I have a different view of it.

I think the Rangers deserved to be scored on like that. They gave a garbage effort for around 90% of the game (they basically dogged it after the first goal they scored) and they deserved to be embarrassed like that. I was never one to believe in the “mercy rule” and I won’t start believing in it now.

If you’re Staal or Del Zotto on that play and you don’t make an effort to get to Hertl, than Hertl has every right to embarrass you. Goals like Hertl’s don’t usually happen because defenseman more often that not are involved in the play and have a say in whether or not the player will score. Not that time. Hertl had acres of space and plenty of time on the play, and had every right to try and make SportCenter’s top 10 plays of the week.

It was a brilliant night for the young kid, and hopefully the Rangers learn a lesson and don’t want to be embarrassed like that again. I fully expect the Rangers to try to destroy Anaheim tonight, and something’s wrong if they don’t feel that way.
