Due to Henrik Lundqvist’s nagging irratation that coach Alain Vigneault wants to nip in the bud before it gets worse, announced after practice today that Cam Talbot will get his first NHL start against Philadelphia tomorrow.
Talbot was called up last week after the team waived veteran backup Martin Biron, who announced his retirement from the NHL on Sunday. Talbot was recently playing in Hartford as he played this past weekends games against Manchester and Portland. Vigneault was in attendance during Friday’s game against Manchester, and liked what he saw from Talbot.
Vigneault stated to reporters that if this was a playoff game, Lundqvist would be in the net starting for the Rangers, but due to it being so early in the season, they decided it was best for him to sit this one out. No word on his status for Saturday’s game against Detroit, but we’ll be following closely. Jason Missinen will be called up to backup Talbot tomorrow in Philadelphia. Lundqvist will travel with the team, but not dress according to Steve Zipay.
In other news, Michael Del Zotto will return to the Rangers lineup tomorrow as Justin Falk will come back out. Del Zotto missed the last two Ranger games, after battling the flu during Wednesday’s game against Washington, and then as a healthy scratch against New Jersey on Saturday, per Andrew Gross.
Meanwhile, no word on who the forward scratch will be for tomorrow’s game, but Vigneault is heavily considering benching struggling forward Mats Zuccarello, who has yet to register a point through 7 games, also according to Andrew Gross.
