The Rangers came into tonight’s game under pressure needing a win, and consistent with the rest of the season they registered a pretty lackluster performance. Yes, they were unlucky in some regards of the game, like sustaining injuries (Cally hurt, Stepan and Brassard taking pucks) throughout but at the same time they were pretty tragic in trying to create and execute these chances.
Then there’s the defense. Marc Staal was a decent piece of glue to the blue line, and now that he’s out the defense is all out of sorts. The players simply aren’t comfortable, and they’re doing things we didn’t see last year or the year before. I would suggest calling some kids up, but no one is ready to step in and that could make the defense fall apart all together. They look very fragile in the mental aspect of the game.
Then there’s Henrik. I’m very sad about Henrik. One would have thought he would have regained his form by now, but no he hasn’t. I still have faith, but he is currently not playing like the best goalie in the league and unfortunately right now he’s going to be paid like one in less than a year.
The Rangers just never looked like they were going to win at any point in the game, which to me is concerning. You can’t just not show up to games. The effort has to be there, and that’s what I miss most when John Tortorella had this team at their best. It’s sad really and it needs to change.
Just going to mention Rick Nash for a second here. The dude is still Team Canada material. He’s got to go to Sochi. I bet he racks up tons of points again in the Olympics.
