After the Horn: Rangers vs Blackhawks

FINAL SCORE: New York Rangers 3 Chicago Blackhawks 2

First Period:

The New York Rangers looked for a good start to their game against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Well they got just that, a little more than five minutes into the first period Brad Richards put the first goal of the night past Corey Crawford and into the net. A few minutes later, with a little more than 10 minutes to go in the period, Mats Zuccarello scored a wrap-around goal on the power play to give the Rangers a 2-0 lead. The rest of the period was all Henrik Lundqvist, ending the period with 15 saves on 15 shots.

Second Period:

The Rangers needed to do one thing in this period, and that was to not roll over and let the Blackhawks gain control of the game. Well they failed, and as Derick Brassard took a penalty and put Chicago’s power play to work and the power play unit did it’s job as the Blackhawks’ captain, Jonathan Toews, scored to cut the Rangers lead in half. Less than two minutes later Brandon Bollig came down the wing and his shot went short side on Henrik Lundqvist into the net to tie the game at 2. The Blackhawks had completed the comeback and the Rangers headed into the intermission the worst way possible, tied to the Hawks and with no momentum.

Third Period:

The third period started off going back and forth between the Rangers and Blackhawks. Rangers were dominating the shots and the play for most of the period, then with just under six minutes remaining in the third period Carl Hagelin scores a goal off the rebound from a Marc Staal blast from the point. The Rangers were on the defensive for the rest of the game and the Blackhawks applied immense amounts of pressure. However we saw the Henrik Lundqvist of old tonight as he made save after save and kept the third goal out of the net and led the Rangers to their first win in Chicago since October 2000. Michael Del Zotto is now on a 3 game point streak and Hagelin leads the team with 4 game winning goals this season.
