Good afternoon New York Ranger Olympic fans! The men’s hockey tournament is heating up with the elimination rounds in full swing.
Let’s start with an update on Mats Zuccarello. The extent of his injury was announced by the New York Rangers as being a fracture in his hand. He is flying back to New York today to be evaluated by team doctors tomorrow.
While you may have been sleeping, Team Sweden beat Slovenia 5-0 to move on to the semi-finals. Henrik Lundqvist registered his second shut out of the tournament and the fourth of his Olympic career. Carl Hagelin registered two goals in the game. The ESPN recap is here.
Team Finland, led by the Boston Bruin’s Tuukka Rask, eliminated Team Russia from their home tournament. The final score was 3-1. The Russian team has struggled in the tournament, being seeded fifth after losing two games in the opening round of the tournament was only the beginning. There were no secrets about the amount of pressure being placed on the shoulders of the men’s hockey team, as evident by this headline.
On the women’s side of the tournament, Team USA and Team Canada are set to square off in the gold medal game tomorrow. This is a rivalry of the strongest level. You can read about it here. The US women haven’t won a gold since the sport’s inaugural Olympic appearance in 1998.
