Last night the New York Rangers absolutely trounced the Edmonton Oilers, on the road. The 5-0 shut out was a huge bounce back from a disappointing loss to the Calgary Flames on Friday night. The Rangers played a great game despite a slow start and a couple lucky breaks in the first period. The NHL chose their three stars of the game and they weren’t surprising.
3- Cam Talbot with 26 saves, 100% save percentage, zero goals against in 59:31 of ice time. He was pulled for an extra attacker on a delayed penalty.
2- Mats Zuccarello with two goals, one short-handed, one assist, three shots on goal, and a +2 rating in 15:12 of ice time.
1- Rick Nash with two goals, one being short-handed, a +2 rating, and four shots on goal during 14:50 of ice time. Nash nearly had a hat trick but Oiler’s goalie, Ben Scrivens, stonewalled him late in the game.
It’s hard to pick three stars for this game because there were so many stand out performances. My choices did not include Talbot. Not because I didn’t think he played well, but because he wasn’t really challenged much by the Oilers. I do have an honorable mention because I think it’s important.
