And The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award Goes To...

Steven McDonald was a New York City Police Officer. He was injured in the line of duty in 1986 and was left completely paralyzed from the neck down. Ever since Detective McDonald’s injury, the New York Rangers Organization established The Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award in the 1987-1988 season. The New York Ranger fans are able to vote for the player who they feel goes above and beyond on and off the ice.
In past years, Ryan Callahan was the very popular winner and who always received my vote as well. However, even if Ryan Callahan were still apart of the team, my vote would be cast for Dominic Moore to receive the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. Dominic Moore is a gritty player. He’s great on the boards. He is not afraid to stand up for his teammates, no matter how big the opponent may be. Although he has only 18 points from six goals and twelve assists this season, Dominic Moore is a force to be reckoned with. He is the total package and an asset to this team. He truly is a stand up guy.
In 2012, Dominic made the decision to take the entire season off to care for his sick wife, Katie, who was fighting a rare form of liver cancer.Sadly, Katie lost her fight to cancer. At such a young age Dominic had to deal with the tragic loss of his wife. In Katie Moore’s honor, Dominic established the Katie Moore Foundation which is dedicated to helping people with rare forms of cancer.
For all he does on and off the ice, I believe Dominic Moore deserves the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award this year. If Dominic wins the award he will receive a trophy and a $25,000 check for the Steven McDonald Foundation in the player’s name presented from Detective McDonald himself.
