Good morning New York Rangers fans! Last night was a great night in so many ways. The Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes at Madison Square Garden 4-1. Three of the Staal brothers played in front of their parents. and the majority didn’t win. I wonder which parent had to console and which congratulated?
Mats Zuccarello was announced as the winner of the Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award. The fans voted and their voice was heard. There’s no doubt Zuccarello goes “above and beyond the call of duty” when he is on the ice. He appeared to be truly shocked when his name was announced as the winner, it didn’t even seem to sink in until he was talking during the intermission report.
Each year the New York chapter of the Professional Hockey Writer’s Association nominates players for the John Halligan Good Guy Award. This year Marc Staal finally won. He has been a candidate for several years and this year was finally his turn. The award is given to the player who is most respectful to the media with giving time for interviews and not hassling the representatives. Not really a stretch of the imagination when it comes to Staal.
Last night Brad Richards netted not one, but TWO power play goals en route to a Rangers win over the Hurricanes. Ricahrds was over due to get back on the scoring side of the stat sheet. It’s a good time to start getting the engine running again. Richards now has 20 goals on the season for 51 total points.
In a non-Rangers NHL update, Kris Letang will play tonight in his first game since suffering a stroke 10 weeks ago. Letang is a defenseman for the Pittsburg Penguins and comes back just in time to prepare for the post season. All rivalries aside, it’s great to see a play go through recovery for something of such magnitude and return in the same season.
Even though it’s not a game day, we’ve got some good pieces coming your way. Stay tuned to see updates on the post season brackets and how things are shaping up as we get closer to the end of the season.
