New York Rangers legend Brian Leetch thinks current defenseman Ryan McDonagh would be a great choice for captain. When Leetch says something, it always gets done. When Leetch played for the Rangers, in which he served as captain from 1997 to 2000, as well as serving as Alternate Captain for most of his career in New York, Leetch was a major player on the Rangers. Scoring goals, adding assists, and providing team inspiration, Leetch became a fan favorite among the Garden crowd. Brian Leetch was also a key player in the team’s 1994 Stanley Cup victory against the Vancouver Canucks.
Now, last season almost everyone can agree that Ryan McDonagh was our best defenseman. Scoring 43 points last year in 77 games played, where 14 of those points were goals and 29 where assists. And then during the playoffs, McDonagh added 17 points in 25 games played, 4 of which were goals and 13 were assists.
At times, it seemed that Ryan McDonagh was our best player on the ice. Putting his growing offensive vision, along with his already great defensive zone play and fast skating, McDonagh has become a valuable NHL defender. At such a young age, he’s already used to playing some of the League’s best, including Crosby and Malkin. He’s only going to get better as well. “MacTruck”, as the fans call him, has had his numbers go up over his career with the Rangers, and he’s only played for one team.
Ryan McDonagh will be adding even more to his stats next year, captain or not. But he deserves to be one of the select few that were graced to wear the “C” on his sweater. Ryan McDonagh was more deserving to wear the “A” on his jersey instead of defensive partner Dan Girardi, in which Girardi was given the “A” because Ryan Callahan was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Martin St. Louis.
Brian Leetch skated in 1,129 games for the Blueshirts, scoring 240 goals. As a defenseman, that is very hard to accomplish but Leetch did it. He knows what it takes to play in the NHL, he knows what it takes to be a defenseman, and he knows what it is like to lead a team. Leetch thinks that Ryan McDonagh should be the next captain of the New York Rangers, and so do the fans.
