Rangers grab big two points in shootout

The New York Rangers’ worst period throughout the season became their strength this afternoon in their matinee matchup with their arch rivals in Philadelphia. The Rangers outshot the Flyers 11-1 in the third period, the 11th of which coming on a Keith Yandle snipe from the right point to beat Steve Mason and give the Rangers a chance to go to overtime with 12.9 seconds left in the game. Jesper Fast got the puck along the side boards from Dan Boyle who was handling the puck behind the net. Fast fired a pass across ice to Yandle, who one timed it right past Mason.

Yandle has been a big topic of discussion in Rangers land over the past couple months due to the fact that he will be an Unrestricted Free Agent come July 1st. I have been of the mindset since day 1 that trading Yandle would be a huge mistake for the Rangers, who haven’t had an offensive defenseman of his caliber in over a decade. What happened tonight to the Rangers defensive corps is also another reason why Yandle needs to stay a Blueshirt.

With 9:24 remaining in the first period, Rangers All Star Defenseman and Captain Ryan McDonagh and Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds got into a bit of a scuffle after McDonagh looked to have gotten his stick up in Simmonds’ face as they skated towards the bench. This prompted Simmonds to be upset with him, and after some jarring with one another, Simmonds threw a punch at McDonagh, knocking him down onto the ice. Simmonds’ punch wasn’t hard by any stretch of the imagination, but he might have gotten his glove on the sweet spot of McDonagh’s jaw, prompting him to fall down to the ice. McDonagh left the game and didn’t return. Neither did Simmonds, as he was thrown out of the game immediately.

The Flyers had a 1-0 lead after 2 periods after a Shayne Gostisbehere scored with a rocket of a shot from the point. From the replay, it kind of looked like Ryan White– who ended up scoring the second goal on a deflection, scored this one– but Gostisbehere got credit for it, and that hasn’t changed as of yet. The Rangers were out-shot 20-8 in the second period alone.

The Rangers tied the game on a beautiful deflection in front of the net by Chris Kreider, who has really turned it on in the past little while, as he has tallied a goal in two straight games. The deflection came off of a shot-pass by Dan Girardi from the point.

  • Overtime was pretty even for the most part, although the Rangers held a 2-0 shot advantage. When we got to the shootout, once again it became the Mats Zuccarello show. Man, does this guy have a set of hands. Zuccarello pulled the old Forseberg move on Mason, who has looked a fool against Zuccarello in the shootout twice this year. After Lundqvist made a great save on Claude Giroux, who made an array of great moves to only get blocked off by the Rangers’ backbone, Derek Stepan went over the right shoulder of Mason to win it for the Rangers right then and there.

The Rangers still have a long way to go to be the team they want and need to be if they want to make noise in the league come playoff time, but this afternoon was a good step as they had to come back from an awful second period to avenge themselves and gain two very big points.
