Hey, folks! John Williams (@JaW1224) here! Welcome to the first ever New York Rangers live recap on Blue Line Station! I will be updating you with my thoughts on the game as it goes on.

The Red Wings come into this game on a two-game losing streak but have garnered at least a point in four straight games.

The last time these two teams met, it was the Jimmy Howard show. The Rangers dominated the whole game and the shots total (33-18) but still fell to the Red Wings by a score of 2-1. Drew Miller, who was waived this morning, scored the game-winner early in the third after a horrible turnover by Henrik Lundqvist behind his own net.

Lundqvist will be in net today for the Rangers, but Howard will not be. Jared Coreau, the rookie, will get the nod for the Red Wings. He has played in three of the Wing’s last five games, tallying two shutouts in that span.

Prediction: Rangers 4, Red Wings 3

First Period

  • Something is going on with NBC’s clock, says 7:20 left in the period when there is actually 17:20 left. Interesting…
  • 17:16- Some sloppy passing turning into a few straight icings.

16:30- Vigneault is complaining to the refs about a hit Danny DeKeyser had on Rick Nash. Looked clean to me.

15:35- Lots of stoppages so far. Only one shot on goal in the game so far and it belongs to the Red Wings

14:29- Kevin Klein struggled to get the puck out of his own zone, Thomas Vanek bullied him at the blue line, kept the puck in and got a solid scoring chance. Where have I seen this one before…

13:55- The Red Wings have had all the scoring chances in the game so far (3-0) but Mike Green will go to the box for interference on Jimmy Vesey in the neutral zone.

When Marc Staal is ready to come back in the lineup, you could count on Kevin Klein coming out for him, at least at first.

First minute of the Rangers power play has not been too bad. Good zone entry, decent puck movement, good shot by McDonagh.

Buchnevich robbed on the doorstep by Coreau, the Red Wings broke out on an odd-man rush, took a heavy shot, Hank made the save and the Rangers got to the juicy rebound first.

11:00- Red Wings putting on a ton of pressure as the power play expires. Had sustained offensive pressure for about a minute. Lundqvist is on his game, he had to come up big numerous times on that barrage.

9:40- Really good forechecking pressure by the Miller-Hayes-Grabner line. Didn’t generate a shot, but forced a couple turnovers. Icing on the Wings.

8:30- Shots 6-3 for the Red Wings. Dan Girardi just blocked a shot and it looks like he is hurting.

7:20- Dylan Larkin is fast, man. Tried the rap-around but Hank was able to get to it.

5:26- Clendening with the lazy clear attempt, puts it over the boards. Red Wings power play coming up.

The above tweet is very accurate.

The Red Wings power play is luckily awful. They are coming in at just over an 11% efficiency which ranks last in the NHL.

4:21- As you could have imagined, the Rangers have had a difficult time clearing the zone. Wings had about 45 seconds of zone time.

4:00- Rangers got the puck out pretty quickly this time.

Red Wings power play is over. No harm, no foul.

Shots are still 6-3 Red Wings.

2:30- Thomas Vanek just missed a wide open net and hit the right post as Lundqvist was down and out.

1:15- Ryan Mantha with a nice shot from the left circle, caught by Henrik Lundqvist for the stoppage in play. First shot in the last 6:30 of action. A lot of blocked shots by the Rangers in this one.

39.1- Another Icing by the Rangers…

17- Zibanejad with a nice neutral zone turnover and got another shot.

Red WIngs had a lot of offensive pressure at the end of the period, Thomas Vanek looks shaken up after getting hit with a Red Wings shot. He was slow to get up.

At the end of the 1st, Rangers 0, Red Wings 0. Shots are 7-3 Red Wings.

  • These tweets sum up the first period perfectly…

2nd Period

  • Random thought, don’t these Sunday afternoon NBC games usually start the weekend after the All-Star Game?
  • 19:43- Nash outhustles an icing, get a shot on net off a rap around.
  • 19:13- Mantha creating havoc in front of the net, draws a penalty on Kevin Klein for holding.
  • 18:13- First minute of the Red Wings power play was spent entirely in the Rangers defensive zone. Red Wings got to shots off in a frantic scene in front of the net.
  • 17:10- Dylan Larkin took an offensive zone penalty, as he tripped Brady Skjei with his skate. Skjei was hurting for a second but seems to be okay. Rangers will go on their second power play of the game.
  • 15:21: Red Wings nearly commit a too many men penalty… power play over.
  • Kind of an “eh” power play.
  • 14:25- Man, Zibanejad’s leg looks to be fine. He has been skating like he has been shot out of a cannon this game.
  • 12:21- Eddie Olcyzk made a good point about Kreider. He needs to play north-south and use his rare combination of size and speed. The second he starts playing east-west, defenses can stop him a lot more easily.
  • 11:23- Buchnevich just took a penalty for holding right off the faceoff. Not a good penalty at all to take. Red Wings back on the power play.
  • 9:49- Mike Green took a penalty for high-sticking Hayes. 4 on 4 for 25 seconds now, then the Rangers will get their third power play.
  • 8:53- Bad change by the Red Wings. Rangers brake out on a 3 on 1 with Nash, Miller and Zibanejad. Coreau made the save on Nash’s shot.
  • 8:15: Stepan looked to be tripped at the blue line, no call.
  • 6:20- The Hayes line just had a phenomenal offensive shift. Best shift of the game for the Rangers. Clendening did a good job keeping the puck in the zone numerous times.
  • 4:06- Some back and forth action now. Red Wings got called for an offsides that wasn’t offsides…
  • 3:56- Rangers are not creating many quality chances. Red Wings are doing a good job forcing them to take shots from bad angles.
  • 1:48- Lundqvist just robbed Frans Nielson with the right pad. He has looked pretty sharp throughout the game.
  • 55.4- McDonagh spots Grabner up ice. Grabner was in alone on Coreau with DeKseyer right behind him. Was robbed by Coreau. Best chance of the game for the Rangers.
  • 4.1 Coreau had a little bit of trouble with a Rangers clear attempt from the other end of the red line. He did make the stop, though.

At the end of the 2nd Period, Rangers 0, Red Wings, 0. Shots on goal 14-12 Red Wings.

  • Once again, Rangers Twitter is right on the money…

3rd Period

  • Great, just great…
  • 18:45- Kevin Klein had a wide open net with the goaltender down and couldn’t control the puck. Huge opportunity wasted. More of an unfortunate circumstance than his fault, though.
  • 17:34- A Red Wings dump in took a crazy carom off the boards. Darren Helm wound up with the puck in he right circle but Lundqvist was able to make the save.
  • 16:35 Rangers headed to the power play. Erikson took the penalty.
  • 16:11- Rangers are getting pass happy, especially Zuccarello–so nothing’s new.
  • 15:15- Red Wings’ crowd gets into the game for the first time. Can’t blame them though, it’s been a snooze fest.
  • 14:35- Lundqvist made a really good save on a Mike Green shot from the point. He had Holden, Lindberg and Tomas Tartar screening him in front.
  • 13:58- Lundqvist absolutely ROBBED Henrik Zetterberg in front of the net. Rangers were struggling on the boards. Holden and Klein couldn’t hold on to the puck, the Red Wing in the corner got a pass off to Zetterberg, who was alone in front. Lundqvist anticipated the deflection perfectly and got to it just in time.
  • 12:07-Damn, this game is ugly… If you aren’t watching it, good on you…
  • 10:32- Red Wings keeping the puck in the offensive zone and are getting some good chances.
  • 9:53- Brady Skjei just made a beautiful play along the boards to cut to the net and get a shot off.
  • 9:17- After a bit of an unorganized zone entry, Stepan got a puck to Holden at the point. Holden fired it and Coreau got it with the glove. Still no score.
  • Side note, the song on the NHL All-Star Game commercials is, quite possibly, the worst piece of “music” I have ever heard.
  • 7:59- Abdelkader and Clendening with lots of pushing and shoving around the crease. The game continues.
  • 4:40- You know what’s going on right now? A whole lot of nothing…
  • 3:01- Vesey had a chance on a 3-on-2. Once again, the Wings are keeping the Rangers to the outside.

We are going to overtime.

  • Don’t wanna get to a shootout with the Wings, they are 6-0 in the shootout.
  • SCORE!!! Zuccarello and Miller were on a two on one. Zuccarello froze Coreau, passed to Miller and Miller put it home!

Rangers WIN 1-0 in Overtime!!!!

Postgame thoughts

  • My God, what a boring game.
  • This is one of those games where you just take the two points and run. Just a bad overall hockey game.
  • Lundqvist is great. This d to be huge for building his confidence back up.
  • Zuccarello keeps finding ways to make big passes. He has 1 goal in his last 20-something games and could’ve easily scored one in regulation if he shot the puck, but like I said, you have to just take what you can get sometimes.

  • The Rangers don’t have that much time to rest. They play the Kings tomorrow night at the Garden and will look to win their third straight. Should be a much better game than tonight was–it can’t be any worse.
