The New York Rangers’ glaring issues have finally come to the forefront. They can no longer sneak out wins with their strong goaltending.

The New York Rangers’ armor has finally cracked. After returning from their bye week, the Rangers were utterly crushed by the rival New York Islanders 7-2. Their next game was the second half of a back-to-back against the reigning Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Once again, they were outclassed by a better team in a 5-2 loss.

After two crushing defeats, the Rangers looked significantly better against the Philadelphia Flyers in a 5-1 win. The Rangers played one of the best games they have played in over a month and were aided by Rick Nash breaking his 12 game scoring drought. They won their second game in a row in a Winter Classic rematch against the Buffalo Sabres 4-3. However, they once again dropped off with a 3-1 loss to the Colorado Avalanche.

The team is maddingly inconsistent to the point they lack a true identity. Even if the Rangers were consistently losing, they would at least be showing some form of consistency. The Rangers’ front office needs to truly decide what they want this team to do and be. Otherwise, the curse of mediocrity could follow them into next season and beyond.
