2. The Liberty Jersey (1996 – 2007)

Ah, the liberty jersey. When the NHL introduced the third jersey during the 1995-1996 season, the Rangers left

themselves out, instead  sitting out the first year of the new trend, and waiting for the next season to start.

The first time I saw the all navy blue jerseys I was amazed. The head of Lady Liberty right in the center, the crest of the jersey. Seeing Wayne Gretzky in one was awesome as well. This was about the time, where we would see the end of the Rangers in the playoffs, and having Wanye skate in the playoffs with the Rangers and wearing this jersey for the majority of the road games in the 1997 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Rangers were looking quite good with these jerseys.

Then the dry spell began, and the Rangers would fail to make the playoffs while having this as their third jersey until the 2005-2006 season, the year following the lockout, and also the first full year of Jaromir Jagr as a New York Ranger. The Rangers wouldn’t wear the jersey during the post season (no team wore their alternates if they made the playoffs after the 96-97 season). Yet this jersey has been the lure of all Ranger fans alike.

During one season only, the 1998-1999 season the Rangers introduced a white version of this jersey, but to me the navy blue jersey is the best version of this jersey. The darks of the blues, and the shadows of the numbers were much crisper and nicer on the navy blue jersey.

Many fans want to see this jersey make a comeback. There is a certain stadium series happening in January, you might just have your wish come true. Time will tell.
