The Rangers defense as currently constructed is simply not good enough. There’s no other way to put it, and I’m sure the message has been sent by now. That being said, I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel and Rangers fans may not come to watch every game with dread.
Taking a glance at the possible subtractions on defense; Dan Girardi will be bought out. After ten years in a Rangers sweater there is reason to believe the front office will cut ties with the veteran. Next, Nick Holden will be taken in expansion by Vegas. Kevin Klein will be traded. However, Brendan Smith will walk and the short-lived fan favorite will skate for another team.
Now for the fun part: the additions. The Rangers will throw money at Kevin Shattenkirk come July 1st. Whether it will be a bad contract or heinous contract is yet to be determined. Josh Manson will make his way to the Rangers from the Ducks in a trade. And finally rookie Alexei Bereglazov will be given every chance to make the team in training camp.
