New York Rangers: Five players with something to prove this preseason
Ondrej Pavelec
The New York Rangers have a new backup goaltender. Following two solid seasons from Antti Raanta, Ondrej Pavelec will take his turn relieving Henrik Lundqvist’s workload.
Pavelec has several critics across hockey, but playing for the Rangers offers a different opportunity. Benoit Allaire is regarded as one of the top goaltending coaches in hockey. Pavelec’s sturdy frame bodes well for his development.
However, under the bright lights at Madison Square Garden Pavelec will be asked to perform immediately. His workload, which will be between 15 and 30 games depending on his success, is paramount to saving Lundqvist for the playoff stretch.
No one expects Ondrej Pavelec to step in and be an elite goaltender or even an elite backup. What the Rangers organization does expect are progress and consistent results. Whether Pavelec is up to the task is yet to be seen.
His preseason performance will be under the microscope.
