As mentioned before, Derek Stepan’s departure leaves open the number one center spot open for grabs. After inking a five year, $26.75 million dollar deal this offseason, it’s clear who the Rangers view as his replacement.

The 24 year old growing center spent last season as the number two behind Stepan. He scored 14 goals and 23 assists for 37 points in just 56 games.  A broken fibula sidelined him for six to eight weeks.

Zibanejad was highly regarded as a two way center with all the tools to prosper as a future number one center in the NHL. The only knock on him was his inconsistent play, a similar trait for most players his age.

However, Zibanejad’s big right handed shot added a key threat to the Rangers power play. His willingness to go to the dirty areas also opened up opportunities for his linemates.

Last season, Zibanejad averaged 17:04 of ice time. Derek Stepan averaged 18:37 of ice time. Zibanejad is ready to handle the work load and responsibility of the top center spot, and his growth will be evident next season.
