Two promising picks

Another decision that gave them space for the addition of Shattenkirk was the trade of Derek Stepan. While this seems to have had given the Rangers a dearth of center depth, the drade did give the Rangers a top ten pick in the draft.

Lias Andersson and Filip Chytil were both selected by the Rangers in the first round — Andersson 7th overall and Chytil 21st.

After a strong pre-season, Chytil made the opening night roster. He only played 13 minutes in two games for the Rangers before being sent down to the AHL. However, he has had a very strong season in Hartford.

Despite missing some games, Chytil has five goals and seven assists for 12 points in 15 games.

Meanwhile, Andersson has been playing for Frölunda FC in his home country of Sweden. He has seven goals and seven assists for 14 points through 22 games.

With the IIHF World Juniors are currently taking place, it is the most consistent action we have been able to see from Andersson and Chytil.

Each has had a strong performance through the qualifying rounds of the championships. Andersson has an impressive six points (five goals, one assist) in four games and was leading the whole tournament. Chytil has four points (two goals, two assists) in four games on a scrappy Czech Republic team.

At this point, both have shown they have the skill needed to succeed in the NHL. For now, it is just a matter of time when both will be playing in the show.
