NEW YORK, NY – JANUARY 16: Henrik Lundqvist /

Up: Henrik Lundqvist

Henrik Lundqvist is an eternal “up” on a mediocre team.

Lundqvist continues to be the reason the Rangers have chances in games. Whether it is a 5-2 loss or a 5-1 win, Lundqvist remains steady in net. Against the Islanders, Lundqvist appeared disgusted with the Rangers performance that game. He proceeded to yell at the entire bench to fire them up before he replaced Ondrej Pavelec in net.

Lundqvist was once again in net against the Pittsburgh Penguins. Even after another fantastic performance, the Rangers defensive breakdowns once again led to a loss. Lundqvist led the Rangers to a 5-1 win against the Flyers. He had 25 saves and a .962 save percentage n the night and was named the second star of the game.

The goaltender’s performance once again allowed the Rangers to come away with two points in a sloppy performance against the Sabres. Lundqvist was able to keep the Rangers ahead in order for them to win 4-3. Against the Avalanche, however, the Rangers did not get as lucky. In a 3-1 loss, not even Lundqvist could keep the Rangers in a game with so many defensive breakdowns.

The only issue with Lundqvist is his stellar play both masks the major defensive issues and may persuade the Rangers to buy at the trade deadline. Even with Lundqvist’s stellar play, I sincerely do not believe the Rangers will make it far in the playoffs. Their playoff performance is, of course, contingent on the Rangers actually making it to the playoffs. If the Rangers want to win a Stanley Cup with Lundqvist, they need to build a strong team around him.
