With such an incredible roster turnover incoming, the New York Rangers will be thin on veterans next season. Shattenkirk, though a new arrival, may very well be the senior statesman on the blue line in 2018-19.

With eight seasons under his belt and a proven desire to play for the team, Shattenkirk would be a good option as captain. With McDonagh gone, Shattenkirk should be counted on heavily to lead the defense at both ends of the rink and on the power play. His experience will also be a tremendous boost to what looks to be a young blue line group.

In a group generally bereft of seasoned veterans, Shattenkirk would be one of the obvious choices. But there’s one other veteran defenseman who likely jumps ahead of Shattenkirk….
