NEW YORK, NY – FEBRUARY 23: Jesper Fast /

Up: Jesper Fast

Jesper Fast has finally been rewarded for being a leader on the New York Rangers.

The Rangers have lost their captain and an assistant captain in Ryan McDonagh and Rick Nash. It may have gone completely under the radar for most people that Jesper Fast was named an assistant captain due to these losses. Additionally, he has two goals and an assist for three points in four games this week.

Fast is not known for his point production. he is known for his ability to be a role player on the fourth line, a role that he fits perfectly. He can be trusted defensively and is also known for his penalty killing ability. However, the main reason he is an up this week is due to his intangible qualities.

Fast is a fantastic addition as an assistant captain. He’s not going to be in your face and he’s not going to be screaming and yelling when the team is playing poorly. While the team could use someone like that, there needs to be a balance. Fast will quietly lead through example. His hard work and personality on and off the ice is perfect to teach the younger players how to act at the NHL level. While he may not appear as a “grizzled veteran,” he is currently playing in his fourth NHL season. He was also a part of the team that went to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2014. Fast is a genuine, albeit quiet, leader who will hopefully get to have the “A” on his jersey officially next season.
