NEW YORK, NY – FEBRUARY 09: Mats Zuccarello /

Down: Mats Zuccarello

Mats Zuccarello has not been the most productive player this week.

Zuccarello is a fan favorite. He is universally loved by teammates and fans alike and is known for his strong work ethic and hunger for wins. After being a leader in the locker room for basically his whole career, he was finally named an assistant captain at the start of the season. However, he has been very hot and cold throughout the duration of the year.

Zuccarello has no points in his previous five games and four (two goals, two assists) in his last ten. His point totals aren’t very far off from his normal numbers through the course of full seasons, yet it feels as though his production has taken a major dip. This is probably due to his production being so intermittent recently. If the Rangers are truly ready to rebuild, they are going to have to face the difficult decision of possibly trading Zuccarello at the draft.

The end of the season is rapidly approaching. There are less than 20 games left in the season, and it looks like the Rangers will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2010. If all goes well, the Rangers will hopefully acquire a top prospect in the upcoming draft and will soon come back into playoff contention.
