The New York Rangers have missed the playoffs for the first time in eight years. Their end of season losing streak was a fitting way to end an atrocious season.

The New York Rangers were marred by ups and downs this season. The team was plagued by injuries, poor coaching, and overall bad luck. When the team failed to pull themselves out of the hold they had dug themselves into, management announced that a rebuild would begin.

The team seriously committed to the rebuild come the trade deadline. They traded away leading scorer Michael Grabner to the rival New Jersey Devils in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2018 draft and defensive prospect Yegor Rykov. Defenseman Nick Holden was traded to the Boston Bruins shortly after for defenseman Rob O’Gara and a third round pick in the 2018 draft.

Then came the major trades. Forward Rick Nash was traded in a seperate deal to the Boston Bruins in exchange for a 2018 first round selection, defensive prospect Ryan Lindgren, forwards Ryan Spooner and Matt Beleskey, and a 2018 seventh round pick. In a shocking move, captain Ryan McDonagh and forward J.T. Miller were sent to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Vladislav Namestnikov, prospects Libor Hajek and Brett Howden, a first round pick in 2018, and a conditional first round pick in 2019.

It’s safe to say the Rangers have committed to tearing apart this team. They have begun cleaning house in other areas too, by firing head coach Alain Vigneault along with assistant coaches Scott Arneil and Darryl Williams. The Rangers appear to have a bright future with all of thir draft picks and prospects, but let’s take a look at how the current roster did this season.
