Pavel Buchnevich was one of the few positves for the New York Rangers despite their up and down season. Even more so considering his situation on the roster.

In his first season with the Rangers, Pavel Buchnevich made a big impact. During the preseason, he started in games on the top line and recorded a goal and two assists in the four games.

However, as the regular season began, he was moved down. And last season, his demotion wasn’t taken as a serious concern — after all, he was a rookie, he needed time to adjust.

However, this season, was a different story.

The success that Buchnevich saw this season was not something that was easily obtained. This is largely due to being mismanaged by Rangers former head coach Alain Vigneault.

Buchnevich’s pairing with Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad was clearly one of the Rangers most successful offensive pieces in 2017-18. However, Vigneault consistently placed Buchnevich at fault when things didn’t seem to click, bouncing him between the second third and fourth lines.

But despite this, Buchnevich somehow maintained consistency and effectively established himself as a player that can handle top line minutes.

The Numbers

Buchnevich recorded 14 goals and 29 assists for a total of 43 points. He was a dangerous force on the ice that could consistently score in important situations.

Nine of Buchnevich’s 14 goals came in even-strength scenarios, the additional five came on the power play.

Scoring 5-on-5 play was one of the Rangers biggest issues this season. To have Buchnevich as a player who managed points in these situations was a huge positive.

In addition, 18 of his 29 assists were primary assists. He took 139 shots on net (1.7 per game) and had a shooting percentage of 10.29 percent.

In addition to this, Buchnevich’s possession statistics were extremely positive. He recorded an overall Corsi-for percentage of 56.09 and in high danger situations a percentage of 58.49.

Statistics like these considering Buchnevich’s adverse situation this season are impressive. He was arguably the player with the least amount of consistency on the roster. Yet, he still managed to be one of the Rangers top producers despite this.

While this season was not ideal for Buchnevich, he was able to build off the game he established last season and show that there is true potential for him to grow.

In his rookie season, he proved that he had the potential to be valuable. This year showed how deep the breadth of his potential is, and established himself as an asset with a salient impact.

He proved this season that if given the opportunity, he can easily be one of the Rangers best players (I’d argue he could easily be a 30+ goal scorer/60+ point player).

Vigneault’s termination gives him a good opportunity to make this a reality next year.
