Four free agents that the New York Rangers must stay away from

The New York Rangers have a lot of open cap space going into free agency. With open cap space becomes lots of responsibility.

Even though they are entering a rebuild, the New York Rangers have the fourth most cap space in the league entering the offseason. There are many things they can do with including trading for another team’s bad contracts to acquire additional assets. They will most likely make a few free agent signings too.

There aren’t many truly great players out on free agency this offseason but there are plenty of useful ones. With that said, there are also some players that the Rangers should just flat-out avoid. This could be because of a million different factors including age, projected contract, recent production, etc.

Aside from Kevin Shattenkirk — who did take a massive hometown discount — the Rangers haven’t went for the big fish of free agency since Brad Richards in 2011. They will likely stick to that path this offseason, too.

Here are four players that the team should steer clear of in free agency.
