The Newcomers

The Rangers, largely unexpectedly, acquired two experienced players at last season’s trade deadline: Ryan Spooner and Vladislav Namestnikov.

Spooner may still be dealt, but if that is to happen, it must be soon. As of this writing he has yet to sign with the Rangers while his arbitration hearing is scheduled for August 4.

The Rangers got business done with Namestnikov relatively early by signing him to a two-year bridge deal at $4 million per year on the first day of free agency.

Unless new head coach David Quinn really likes either of the two at center, the plan for the 2018 trade deadline acquisitions is pretty straightforward; they will be top nine wingers and play with whomever they work best with.

Their versatility is an added bonus as they can slot into center in a pinch (in case of injuries or benchings).
