The final roster spot up for grabs is the backup goaltender role. There are a few guarantees in life, death, taxes and Henrik Lundqvist in the crease as long as he’s healthy. The team has relied on their backup goaltender more and more the past few seasons as Lundqvist has aged and the team has deteriorated in front of him.

This past season the Swede was pulled from more games than any other season in his entire career.

The backup goaltender job is among the most important jobs on an entire team. The Rangers are going to need 25 or so starts out of a backup and have two serious candidates for the role. There is the young Alexandar Georgiev who impressed in limited action this past season. There is also Marek Mazanec who has been a long time starter in the AHL for a number of years.

Training camp figures to let the Rangers sort out their roster. It is never a bad thing to have a variety of options when it comes to roster selection. There are a total of six roster spots up for grabs and 18 candidates for the spots.
