PHILADELPHIA, PA – APRIL 07: Henrik Lundqvist /

Neutral: Henrik Lundqvist

Added to the ups and downs of the stock market is a new category: neutral. This new ranking is for players whose play should be discussed, but don’t warrant an “up” or “down” ranking.

This ranking holds true for Henrik Lundqvist. The long tenured Rangers goalie has been the King of New York for over 13 years now. And in his one preseason game, the King looked mortal.

New Yorkers have been spoiled by incredible goal tending. So it causes a slight overreaction whenever Lundqvist can’t play like he did when he was 29.

The reason I have Lundqvist ranked as neutral and not down is because he’s not a down. It was his first preseason game, there’s no reason to believe that Lundqvist will let in five goals a game for the entire season. Much like Brendan Smith’s first preseason games, we have to take this outing with a grain of salt.

The Swede was playing behind a team that did not seem to concerned with playing defense as he did not have a chance on most of the goals he allowed.

However, Lundqvist is 36. While he has defied aging until this point, Lundqvist will almost certainly start seeing a decline in his play. We have already stated seeing it, but have been able to ignore it due to Lundqvist playing at super-star status for so long.

So, while we can expect Lundqvist to be in a decline, he is not going to forget how to stop pucks overnight. So sit back and enjoy the King while he’s still ruling the crease.
