#3 Some help From Draisaitl vs. Boston – November 26, 2017

When Strome was traded to the Oilers, many thought he would thrive playing with some of the better players in the NHL.  With the likes of Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, the Oilers lack of success has been puzzling.

Unfortunately, Strome didn’t get much time with any of them. In his time in Edmonton, he spent 58:25 with McDavid and 1123:51 without him.

He played with Nugent-Hopkins for 110:30 and without him for 829:21. Finally, 197:49 of Strome’s time was spent with Draisaitl, and 939:15 was without.

In those almost 200 minutes with Draisaitl, Strome played some of his best hockey. Their Corsi-For percentage together was 52.94, both of their respective percentages improving when playing on the same line (all of these stats via Natural Stat Trick‘s Player Index tool for Ryan Strome from 2017-2018 to 2018-2019).

This goal, in particular, shows just how well they work with each other. Strome, doing what he does best, receives a perfect pass from Leon Draisaitl and fires a shot on net, which goes in.

Even though his time with Edmonton’s more elite talent was short, he definitely made the best of it. If this is what the 25-year-old can do with the Oilers’ best player, fans can only imagine what he’ll be capable of with New York’s talented forwards, like Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad.
