It was a day of firsts.  The first New York Ranger win of 2019.  The first Ranger win at the Barclays Center.  The first road win over the Islanders since March 10, 2015.  The Cup is ours!  Not quite, but this was a very encouraging victory.

With six minutes left in the hockey game the score was tied 1-1.  Every Ranger fan was waiting for that deflating winning goal by Mathew Barzal.  That kind of crushing blow has become an inevitability this season.

But a miracle happened.  Tony DeAngelo sent the puck to the front of the crease, with Chris Kreider creating havoc in front, Mats Zuccarello channeled  Lionel Messi and deflected the puck towards the net with his skate and it trickled through Robin Lehner and over the goal line.

The Rangers deserved this win.  They battled hard and came from behind, outshooting the Islanders 26-25 and not allowing a power play goal (asterisk required).  The goals came from players who really needed it.  Filip Chytil scored the tying  goal and Mats Zuccarello had the game winner.

Chris Kreider came back from being benched in the second period after taking another stupid penalty, to play a dynamic game.  Tony DeAngelo came back from sitting out games to play one of his best games as a Ranger. Alexandar Georgiev had another strong game versus the Isles.

In the first period, the Rangers did everything in their power to give this game to the Islanders.  They took three penalties, but were able to kill them all.

Despite the penalties, the Isles only outshot the Rangers 10-8.  The Isles did take 17 shots to the Rangers 11 and won 10 faceoffs to the Rangers four.  One indication that the Rangers meant business was that they outhit the Islanders 16-8.

The second period was more of the same. It was back and forth action until Chris Kreider took his third dumb penalty this year, holding Jordan Eberle right after one of the best Ranger shifts of the game.   The Rangers killed the penalty, but just as the penalty expired, Anthony Beauvillier scored.

Though it wasn’t officially a power play goal, there were only four Ranger skaters on the ice when it went in.  That earned Kreider a seat on the bench for the remainder of the period.

Five minutes later, Boo Nieves stripped Jordan Eberle of the puck in the neutral zone and led the rush into the Islanders end.  He dished the puck to Filip Chytil who put the puck past Lehner.  Here are two angles of the goal.

With the score tied, there was some penalty craziness as both teams had two man advantage. The first was for the Rangers when Brock Nelson and Lucas Sbisa took penalties.  The Rangers had 1:23 of two man advantage and the result was predictable.  No shots on goal. David Quinn even called a timeout to discuss strategy.  The Islanders had :48 of the two man advantage when Jesper Fast was called for tripping and then Ryan Strome hit Cal Clutterbuck with an errant high stick. The result was the same, no goals.  The second period ended with the score tied and the Islanders with an 7-8 shot advantage.

That set the stage for the Mats Zuccarello heroics.

That left the Rangers with 5:05 to kill, time that was aided by a Valtteri Filppula hooking penalty with 2:17 left.  The Rangers kept the Islanders bottled up in their own end and unable to pull their goalie until there were :48 seconds left in the game.  Georgiev made a nice save on an Anders Lee tip with seconds left and the Rangers were on their way.

Notes on the game

This was the most complete sixty minute game the Rangers have played this year,  a continuation of their effort in the third period on Thursday.  They are taking more shots and hitting more.  The only issue is that they still take too many penalties.

The Rangers actually killed two two-man advantages.  The Islanders had a brief ten second advantage in the first period.

During the longer Islander two-man advantage, Adam McQuaid brought play to a halt when he blocked a slapshot just above the knee. McQuaid is one tough guy as he was back on the ice within a couple minutes.

The Ranger penalty kill went 6-6, their first perfect game since New Years’ Eve in St. Louis.  Again, they really did allow a power play goal, but statistically they were perfect.

Fredrik Claesson sustained an ugly injury in the third period.  He was hammered into the boards by Matt Martin while trying to shoot the puck at the redline and left the ice immediately, favoring his right shoulder.

Of the three first period penalties called on the Rangers, at least two were marginal.  The worst was the holding penalty Zuccarello took on Mathew Barzal.  Barzal is a master at drawing these penalties as he keeps his legs going and any attempt to slow him down can become a penalty. The Rangers should learn from him.

They held Barzal off the scoresheet.  He still had three shots on goal and played an active game, but he didn’t have the time and space he was given in prior games.  Still, when he had possession of the puck in the Rangers’ end with seconds left, it was scary.

  • Mats Zuccarello had his third straight solid game. Again, it coincides with his interview with Larry Brooks about the possibility of a trade.
  • Boo Nieves only saw six minutes of ice time, but he made the key takeaway in center ice and made the pass to Chytil for the tying goal.

As much of a factor Cody McLeod was on Thursday, he was kind of invisible in this game, only playing five minutes. A Barry Trotz admonition to his team to ignore McLeod was probably  responsible.

The Rangers outhit the Islanders 27-21.  That’s the Islanders of Matt Martin, Cal Clutterbuck and Ross Johnston. The Rangers were led by Adam McQuaid with five and McLeod and Brady Skjei with four each.

Although the Rangers won only 47% of the draws, Mika Zibanejad had a rebound game, winning 17 of 29 (59%).  He won some huge draws in the Ranger zone during penalty kills.

Anthony Beauvillier is more of a Ranger killer than Barzal.  In ten games, Beauvillier has seven goals and six assists for 13 points.  He has scored seven goals on 22 shots, a 32% shooting percentage.  Barzal has 14 points in eight games and 27% shooting percentage.

I have to point out that the Islanders selected Beauvillier with the 28th pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.  That pick originally belonged to the Rangers and was traded to Tampa for Martin St. Louis.

Dave Maloney made a cute observation post-game.  The Rangers have now won games in four of the five boroughs.  Yankee Stadium, Citifield, Barclays and MSG, with only Staten Island missing.

The next game is a 6pm start Sunday versus John Tortorella and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Can they keep this up?  Blue Jacket fans are waging a full scale campaign to pursuade Artemi Panarin to stay in Ohio.  He’s been offered free banking and a lifetime supply of vodka by local businesses.

My three stars of the game

    Alexandar Georgiev

is becoming an Islander killer. He has played in three games versus the Fishsticks and has a GAA of 0.87 and a .967 save percentage.  He made the key saves when needed in this game and gives further proof why he should be playing more.

  • Filip Chytil scored the tying goal and it was a goal scorers goal.   How many times have we seen a break-in like this only for the Ranger shooter to be foiled?  Chytil made no mistakes on this one. He had several other excellent offensive opportunities.  Maybe another goal scoring streak is in the works?
  • Tony DeAngelo was a force on offense and solid on defense. This was a tough call as Mats Zuccarello, Brady Skjei and Kevin Shattenkirk all had excellent games.  But it was DeAngelo’s pass to the crease that led to the game winning goal.  On the Ranger powerplay in the final two minutes, DeAngelo was on the ice quarterbacking the play and keeping the puck in the Islanders’ zone.
  • Next. Should Jesper Fast be traded?. dark

The official three stars of the game
