New York Rangers: How does Filip Chytil’s age 19 season compare?
Tyler Seguin
As one of the most recognizable faces in the NHL with the talent to back it up, Tyler Seguin is amongst the best centers in the NHL. It took a massive trade to another team and years of seasoning but eventually he developed into what his amateur play indicated he’d be, an elite playmaker.
At age 19 with the Boston Bruins, Seguin recorded 22 points in 74 games while averaging 12:13 of ice time. The forward did so while starting 51.2 percent of the time in the offensive zone, meaning that Boston clearly did what it could to put Seguin in a position to succeed from the beginning. Sheltered matchups allow young players to find their legs and build confidence.
Right away we can point out that Chytil already needs just one more point over the final 17 games of the NHL season to match Seguin’s clip. In addition to similar conventional stats, Seguin’s CF% was about two percent better than the Ranger prospect.
Meaning that Chytil is playing at a similar level to Seguin at age 19. That should encourage everyone around Rangers hockey, while similar stats in a rookie year are no guarantee of future success, patterns do emerge over time and those in similar groupings do tend to fall together down the line.
