When the New York Rangers promoted Tim Gettinger there were hopes he would be the latest in a series of prospects to have an impact on the major league level.  However, he played four games and was sent back to Hartford and never got an other chance.

Tim Gettinger: Grade Incomplete

It’s Tim Gettinger‘s turn for a report card on his brief tenure with the New York Rangers. Along with Matt Beleskey and Steven Fogarty, he’s the last of three players we will be reporting on who had really short mid-season stints in the NHL this season.

His season

There was a lot of optimism when Tim Gettinger was called up. He was brought up to replace Cody McLeod, who had broken his hand in a fight.  Things were going well for the Rangers who had won nine of 12 games, losing only one game in regulation.  20-years old, the rookie had gotten off to a good start in Hartford, scoring seven goals in 20 games for the Wolf Pack.

At 6’6″, 220 pounds, the Rangers were looking for Gettinger to bring some size and strength to the fourth line.  He ended up playing four games for New York, averaging 7:31 minutes of ice time.  While he didn’t score, he did have 15 hits in those four games.  Although he was a  physical presence, the Rangers lost three of those four games and the team decided to send him back to Hartford and promoted Matt Beleskey.

After his demotion, he played another 44 games in Hartford, scoring an additional seven goals and 16 points.  He finished the season a minus 20 for the Wolf Pack and wasn’t able to maintain the scoring pace he had before his Ranger debut.

Why the grade

It’s pretty simple.  He only played four games and 30 minutes with the Rangers this season.

Gettinger is one of the many question marks when it comes to Blueshirt prospects.  A fifth round draft pick in 2016, Gettinger is now 21 years old and has one full AHL season under his belt. Once though to be highly regarded, he is clearly behind Vinni Lettieri and Boo Nieves on the depth chart and when Connor Brickley and Brendan Lemieux were acquired, there was no chance we would see Gettinger again this season.

He is still under an entry level contract for two more years so he has time to either develop into a bottom six NHL forward or will remain an AHL regular.
