The holidays are over and that means winter break is done for the New York Rangers prospects in college.  They have gotten right back to action.

The NCAA hockey season mirrors the school year, so for most New York Rangers collegiate prospects, they were off for the holidays.  School is back in session and that mean hockey is back.  Here is how the future Blueshirts did in games through this weekend.

We’ll start with the ECAC and arguably the best forward prospect in the NCAA.

Morgan Barron (C) – 2017 6th round – #174

Morgan Barron continues to be one of the brightest stars in the Ranger’ prospect universe. He continues to lead the Big Red in scoring with nine goals and 18 points in 15 games.  He is one of the top scoring college players in the NCAA.  Since the resumption of the season,  Barron has played in four games and continued his excellent play.

January 3-4 the Big Red travelled to Las Vegas for games against Ohio State and Providence. He came out of the mini-tournament with an assist in the first game and the second game, a 2-2 tie with Providence, Barron scored both of the Cornell goals.

This weekend Cornell beat RPI 3-0 with Barron scoreless and they tied Union College 2-2.  Barron assisted on Cornell’s second goal.

Cornell is in second place in the ECAC Conference with a 8-1-1 record, but is still ranked #1 in the nation along with North Dakota.   Overall, their record is 12-1-2.  They host  17th ranked Northern Michigan in two games this weekend.

Simon Kjellberg (D)  – 2018 6th round – #163

Simon Kjellberg is making a statement as a freshman at Rensselaer. He is their leading freshman scorer with four goals and eight points this season.   He has seen a lot of action even with the holiday break.  On December 29, Rensselaer lost to UMass 5-3 with Kjellberg assisting on a first period power play goal for the Engineers.

On January 3 RPI was victorious 3-1 at Clarkson.  Kjellberg scored the first goal 1:23 into the game on a deflection.  He was scoreless in a 3-0 win at St. Lawrence.

This weekend, the Engineers were shut out 3-0 by Cornell and then turned around and shut out Colgate by the same score.  Kjellberg assisted on the Engineers’ second goal.

Rensselaer is tied for fourth in the ECAC Conference with a 6-6-1 record and they are 9-11-1 overall.   Next weekend they have to road games at Brown and Yale.

The Hockey East conference has a couple of the best young players in the Rangers pipeline in Zac Jones and Tyler Wall.
