New York Rangers vs Winnipeg Jets: A good 4-1 win against a good team
By Steve Paulus
Notes on the game
There were no points scored by a Ranger defenseman in this game. The last time that happened was on February 1 when they defeated Detroit 1-0. The Rangers have scored four or more goals in 24 games this season and this was the first time that a defenseman didn’t get a point in one of those games.
MSG Network unearthed this gem. Chris Kreider’s first goal tonight was identical to a goal he score against Winnipeg five years ago.
Jacob Trouba was booed every time he touched the puck, but did get a nice video tribute that generated applause. He played a physical, aggressive game, leadiing the Rangers in ice-time and adding four shots, three blocks and three hits.
David Quinn was critical of the NHL decision to make Shesterkin undergo the concussion protocol. “I think the league needs to take a look at their procedure…if the trainer tells you it’s an ankle issue I don’t understand why you have to go through concussion protocol.” He continued, “it’s unfortunate we had to take him out because it’s unfair to everybody if it’s not a head issue.” You can bet that if the Jets had scored on a cold Lundqvist, Quinn would have been a little more pointed in his remarks.
The Blueshirts won the battle of the special teams, though they only had one power play. They’ve had only 14 power plays in their last seven games. Their reputation on the PP must be forcing teams to stay away from penalties against them.
The Rangers are now 21-1-2 when going into the third period with a lead. The Jets had won six games they had trailed going into the third period, third most in the NHL.
