Notes on the game

  • The review of the shootout goal brought back memories of the last time a Ranger shootout goal was disallowed.  That was when Dan Boyle scored what appeared to be the game winner, but it was disallowed when it was determined he shot the puck twice.  The Blueshirts had to come back from the locker room and the Penguins went on to win the shootout.
  • The two teams might have set an unofficial record for the most players named “Ryan” in one NHL game.  There were five –  Parise, Suter and Hartman from the Wild and Lindgren and Strome from the Rangers.

David Quinn is now batting  .500 on coach’s challenges.   This was the second interference challenge this season and the first time they have won.  They have won one offside challenge and lost a puck over the glass challenge.  Their four challenges equals the total from last year when they won once.

  • Chris Kreider was hit by a puck early in the game and appeared to be hurt.  He played his regular shift, but was not the force that he has been recently.
  • Pavel Buchnevich has not had a lot of luck this season, but he has scored five goals in his last nine games.

For a while it looked like this would be a game with no power plays.   The Rangers were awarded the first power play of the game six minutes into the third period. They were called for two penalties after that.

The Rangers had an awful night on faceoffs, winning only 19 of 59.  Faceoffs are always a good way to see how hard a team is concentrating and their play reflected that.  The Rangers 15 of 17 first period faceoffs and 10 of 15 in the second period.  They turned that around in the third period, winning 11 of 21.

Puck possession is absolutely crucial in the overtime period and the Rangers were an abysmal 1-5 on draws in the overtime.  Not good.

As they go for four in a row against Columbus, the last time the Rangers won four straight games was November 2018.

The only other time the Rangers came from behind after trailing going into the third period was their comeback win in Montreal in December.

  • There were two times the teams played four-on-four and the Rangers really loaded their offense with Adam Fox and DeAngelo on defense and Zibanejad and Kreider up front.
  • The Rangers swept the season series from Minnesota, taking both games in extra time. it was the first series sweep since 2014-15 and came after losing both games each of the last two seasons.
