Lundqvist’s take

Lundqvist talked to the media after the game and was more critical of his performance than Quinn.   Lundqvist said “When you haven’t played in a long time, personally you want to go out there and build a good feeling.  Obviously that  was pretty tough when you give up three first period goals.  I don’t think I was very good. ..there were a couple tough situations, that’s for sure.  We took some sloppy penalties that cost us…their power play was really good.”

“I don’t think I was very good.” – Henrik Lundqvist

From his comments it’s clear that Lundqvist really wanted to get off to a good start and the early goal was a hit to his confidence. “I was hoping for a better feeling personally, coming out there…a lot of times you create that feeling by doing a lot of good things.  I felt I was doing a few good things, then, when you put yourself in a hole like that, three or four goals up, it’s hard to play a patient game.”

Reading between the lines, it was obvious that Lundqvist was taking responsibility for the second period Flyers goals.

He did address the issue of the long layoff when asked if it was like coming back from an injury.  Lundqvist said “There are so many things that are different. I’m not going to get into it now.  The most important  thing right now is to try to work hard and then and be ready when you get an opportunity….Coming back from an injury, when you know your’re going to play, it’s a different mindset. But I’m not looking for any excuses. It is what it is.”

He returned to the theme of the early deficit. ” A lot of times, that first period will set the tone too. If you can get out of the first period and feel a bit better, it’s a different game. Now  you’re down three nothing and it’s just makes it a little more challenging to feel good about your game. I battle.  I battle until the end. The third period, I started to feel better.”

He returned again to the early deficit, “Three minutes in, we take a penalty and they score right away. That’s tough when you play three games in two months and you start a game like that. ”
