What franchise records will these young Rangers break?

These records will never be broken

Plus-Minus:  +63 – Brad Park 1971-72

How good was Artemi Panarin this season?  His plus/minus rating of +36 ranks the best by a New York Ranger who wasn’t on those great Ranger teams of the early 1970s.  No one is even close.   But as good as Panarin was, he was still 27 points behind Park.  This record is safe.

Shots on goal:  368 – Jaromir Jagr 2005-06

We all know how much Coach David Quinn wants the Rangers to shoot the puck. How much would David Quinn have loved Jaromir Jagr?  His mark of 368 shots on goal is one that will probably stand forever. These days you have to look hard to find a season when a Ranger had over 300 shots .  The last time it happened was when Rick Nash totaled 304 shots in 2014-15.  When the season was halted, Panarin led the team with 209 shots with Zibanejad right behind at 208.

Penalty minutes:  305  – Troy Mallette  1989-90

Troy Mallette is the only Blueshirt to exceed 300 penalty minutes in one season.  In the new NHL with fighting discouraged, only one NHL player has exceeded 300 minutes in the last ten seasons and that was the immortal Zenon Konopka of the New York Islanders who totaled 307 minutes in 2010-11.  The highest total for a Ranger in the last decade was Sean Avery with 174 PIM in 2010-11.  Nope, this record will never be broken.

Some other records that may be out of reach

Hat tricks:  4 – Tomas Sandstrom 1986-87

Four hat tricks in one season is pretty impressive.  Those five goals that Mika Zibanejad scored were pretty impressive too.  Zibanejad has had two hat tricks in one season.  Is four out of reach?

Shorthanded goals:  7 – Theo Fleury 2000-01

Seven shorthanded goals in one season is an awful lot.  Since Fleury set that franchise record, the most anyone on the team has scored is Rick Nash with four in 2014-15 and Brandon Prust with five in 2010-11.  While you cannot rule out a current Ranger from breaking Fleury’s record, it will take a lot of luck to do it.
