The New York Rangers have made it clear that they won’t go with three goalies next season
What are the New York Rangers going to do with their three goalies? Igor Shesterkin is clearly destined to be the number one netminder next season. Henrik Lundqvist has one more year left on his contract and an ironclad no movement clause. Alexandar Georgiev is an arbitration eligible Restricted Free Agent. With Shesterkin’s slot assigned, it comes down to Lundqvist or Georgiev as his backup. There has been much speculation about a potential buyout for Lundqvist and there is the possibility that he will retire.
What happens with Georgiev will dictate the action the Rangers will take with their future Hall of Fame goaltender. While the idea of a Shesterkin-Georgiev tandem is attractive, it’s very possible that there will be teams looking to add a goalie and Georgiev could be the answer. The list of goaltenders who will be going into the off-season as Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA’s) is impressive. Starting goaltenders include Jacob Markstrom, Corey Crawford, Robin Lehner, Jimmy Howard, Craig Anderson, Braden Holtby and Cam Talbot . Backups include Anton Khudobin , Thomas Greiss, Brian Elliott and Louis Domingue.
While that makes it seem like the market will be flooded with available netminders, it also means that there will be jobs available and that’s where Georgiev comes in. He’s young, will be relatively cheap and has shown that he can excel on the big stage.
