Could a New York Rangers and Michael Grabner reunion be on the cards?

The speedster is currently exploring all of his options according to reports and will take his time before making a decision on his next destination.

However, the Rangers would be wise to reach out and touch base on bringing Grabner back to The Big Apple for the 2020-21 NHL season.

Grabner spent just under two seasons with the Blueshirts between 2016-18, recording 71 points (52 G, 19 A) in 135 games with a plus/minus rating of +33, before being dealt to the New Jersey Devils at the 2018 Trade Deadline.

Boasting elite speed, Grabner is a deadly weapon on the breakaway and he would be a perfect fit on the penalty kill for the Rangers, with 22 shorthanded goals to his name in his career.

His speed and the way he plays the game should make him a good fit in Head Coach David Quinn’s system, and a third-line combination of Grabner and Filip Chytil has the potential to be deadly.

Most recently with the Arizona Coyotes, where he put up 27 points (17 G, 10 A) in 87 games, Grabner could take on a checking role for the Rangers while being a good fit inside the room and a mentor to the likes of Chytil and Brett Howden.

Also, having averaged 12:22 minutes of ice time for the Coyotes in 2019-20, Grabner could play in all situations while adding an offensive punch from the bottom of the lineup.

If Michael Grabner would be willing to take a short-term, team-friendly deal at maybe a $2.5 million AAV, then it could be a smart pickup for the New York Rangers with a lot of upside.
