Rangers badly outplayed in 4-0 loss to the Islanders

Notes on the game

  • The Rangers were beaten in nearly every statistic
    • The won only 21 of 51 faceoffs, a 42% winning rate
    • Shots were 33-24 Islanders.
    • The Islanders blocked 20 shots to the Rangers 11
    • The Rangers had 15 scoring chances with seven high danger
    • The Islanders had 26 scoring chances with 14 high danger
    • The Rangers had seven takeaways to six for the Isles.
    • The Rangers had five giveaways to the Islanders’ six.
    • The Islanders outhit the Rangers 26-24.
  • At the end of the second period, Brendan Lemieux took a embellishing penalty after getting punched by J.G. Pageau.  Pageau took a roughing minor, but Lemieux’s reputation kept the Rangers off the power play.
  • Alexis Lafrenière played 15:27 including 1:36 on the power play and 2:10 on the penalty kill. He looked at home with Chytil and Gauthier and he had one good scoring opportunity on the doorstep.
  • K’Andre Miller played 13:59, least of any defenseman.  He sat for the end of the second period and the start of the third, but was back in the game later in the third period.
  • Kevin Rooney left the game after being rocked in a collision with Ross Johnston. At first it looked like an innocent collision, but it could be called a borderline head shot.
  • Julien Gauthier played 10:12, second fewest of any forward but he used his body well and had a couple good scoring opportunities.
  • Mika Zibanejad played 19:43, second most among forwards and led the team with five shots.
  • How much did the new lines play together?  Here are the 5v5 numbers:
    • Chytil-Lafrenière-Gauthier 4:21
    • Strome-Panarin-Kakko   5:03
    • Zibanejad-Kreider-Buchnevich   7:07
    • Rooney-Lemieux-Howden    2:09
  • True to his word, Quinn used Buchnevich on the penalty kill for 3:43 and Kreider for 2:45.  Howden had the most ice time shorthnded of any forward, 6:27 while Jack Johnson had over  seven minute of penalty killing time.
  • With his goal, Mathew Barzal improved his numbers as a Ranger killer. He now has five goals and 19 points in 13 games.
  • From his post game remarks, David Quinn hinted that we may see Alexandar Georgiev in goal on Saturday.
