Note on the game

  • With two goals, Artemi Panarin now has 10 goals and 25 points in 16 career games against the Islanders, the most points against any team. His top opponent for goal scoring remains the 12 goals he has scored against the Rangers.
  • Pavel Buchnevich led the team with two goals and an assist for three points. In his last nine games, he has four goals and eight assists for 12 points.
  • The win gives Georgiev a 6-2 lifetime record against the Islanders with two shutouts. He improved his career save percentage to a scintillating .941 and his goals against average to 1.80.
  • Jack Johnson was credited with a team high five hits.  Jacob Trouba was next with four.
  • Jacob Trouba logged the most ice time, playing 24:03 minutes. Panarin led all forwards in ice time with 22:17.
  • In a reversal, the Rangers were 1-7 on the power play after giving the Islanders eight power plays in the opener.  In this game the Rangers were shorthanded three times.
  • After an early Rangers advantage, the Isles won the faceoff battle, 31-25.
  • The Islanders outhit the Rangers 31-22.  They also blocked 20 shots to the Rangers’ six. It was the second straight game with 20 blocked shots for the Isles.
  • Alexis Lafrenière was held off the scoreboard again, but he is getting closer. He played 16:31 and had three shots on goal.  At 5v5 when he was on the ice, the Rangers had eight shot attempts to the Islanders’ four.
  • The line of Chytil, Di Giuseppe and Kakko had a good game with a Corsi For percentage of 88.9% at even strength.
  • Brendan Smith continue to be a penalty magnet, drawing two minors. He was one of the top Rangers last season, drawing 19 penalties in limited ice time.
  • K’Andre Miller had an excellent rebound game. He played just over 14 minutes and he and his partner Smith had a plus/minus of +3, best on the team. He showed no hesitation to jump into the offense and he showed why he drew raves from the coaches in training camp.
  • With the strong performance by Miller and Smith, David Quinn will have to decide how long his benching of Tony DeAngelo will last.
  • The last game the Rangers won was in Dallas on March 10, 2020. That was 312 days between wins for the team. Their last home win was the Mika Zibanejad five goal game against Washington on March 5.
  • There was no word of the severity of the injury to Semyon Varlamov.  The Islanders signed Cory Schneider as their second back up goalie two days ago.
  • The NHL announced that the Rangers’ game in Washington on Sunday, February 21 will start at 7pm instead of 5pm.
