The Game

The game got off to a quick start with the Penguins getting a quality scoring chance in the opening seconds of the game. The game would settle down as the New York Rangers gradually took control. The period would find good pressure applied by the fourth line, Alexis Lafreniere shooting the puck and some quality goaltending. The highlight of the period though, belonged to K’Andre Miller for winning a one on one battle behind the net from Sidney Crosby.

Colin Blackwell would open the scoring on a beautiful deflection of a Adam Fox shot, assisted by Brett Howden

The Penguins would find their legs in the second, out-shooting the Rangers 9-8 and converting on a Bryan Rust breakaway, midway through the period to tie the game. The Rangers would not go down quietly in the period though as Ryan Strome would finish off a scoring play set up by Pavel Buchnevich and Atremi Panarin.

The idea that the Rangers would learn to protect a third period lead was quickly dashed when Jared McCann’s shot from the boards evaded Shesterkin for the tying goal. The Penguins, although outshot nine to four, out attempted the Rangers 18-17 for the third period. The culmination of which resulted in the winning goal by Jake Guentzel with just 1:31 remaining, securing the win for Pittsburgh.
