Not just coaches

The Rangers have had their fair share of players with baggage besides DeAngelo.  Sean Avery was beloved by the fans and hated by the rest of the league and was well known for his off ice activities.  The NHL suspended him after he made a derogatory remark about Dion Phaneuf who was dating his ex-girlfriend.  He also publicly feuded with John Tortorella when the latter was a hockey commentator.  When Tortorella became his coach with the Rangers,  to describe the relatioship as strained would be an understatement.

Theo Fleury’s tenure with the Rangers was a series of off-ice headlines as he battled substance abuse and the pressure of playing  in New York.  The low point was when he was accused of assaulting the San Jose Shark’s mascot during a game, a story he denies.

In 2007, Jaromir Jagr didn’t get along with defenseman Aaron Ward and it resulted in an argument on the bench that led to Ward’s trade to Boston.

Current Ranger fans are more familiar with Lias Andersson’s suspension when he quit on the Hartford Wolf Pack and Vitali Kravtsov’s issues last season.

Most of the behind the scenes issues facing NHL teams never become public.  In this case, as soon as DeAngelo hit the waiver wire, the story exploded.   It won’t be the last controversy to face the New York Rangers, but the good news is the team moved quickly to put it behind them.
