Entry Level Deals to come?
March 1 is the first day that teams can sign players to Entry Level Contracts (ELC’s) for next season. The Rangers have two players on their Reserve List who need to be signed by June 1 or they will lose their rights. Hunter Skinner is a defenseman selected in the fourth round of the 2019 draft and he won a gold medal with Team USA at the WJC last month. He’s a right shot blueliner and the odds are they will sign him.
The other draft pick they risk losing is Swedish defenseman Calle Själin, a lefthanded blueliner who has been playing for Leksands in the SHL. The 21-year-old is a stay-at-home defenseman and they may not sign him. NHL teams are allowed to have 50 players under contract and they are close at 44 right now.
There are eight players whose rights expire June 1, 2022 and some of them are sure to be inked this year including Swedish blueliner Nils Lundkvist and Finnish forward Lauri Pajuniemi . All four players in Canadian juniors drafted in 2020 need to be signed by next June including Braden Schneider, Dylan Garand, Will Cuylle and Matt Rempe. Stay tuned.
Zuccarello is hot
A former Ranger and fan favorite is off to a hot start for the Minnesota Wild. Mats Zuccarello missed the first month of the season with a broken arm, but after going scoreless in his first game back, he has scored three goals and added eight assists for 11 points in six games.
Zuccarello is 33 years old and had a tough season last year with only 15 goals after signing a big contract, but this season he is showing why he earned the big payday.
