Notes on the game

The Rangers allowed only 16 shots on goal in the first two periods.  The Flyers did have 10 shots in the third period, when it really didn’t matter.

The Rangers scored on the power play for the first time in four games.  The were 1-4 though the final man advantage came with only 19 seconds left in the game.  On the three full power plays, the top unit was on the ice for virtually all of the time with a man advantage. When it works it’s great, but when the power play is not clicking, it is a momentum killer .

The Ranger penalty was perfect again, stopping the Flyers twice. The are now 62 for their last 68, a 91.2% success rate.

This was Alexandar Georgiev’s second shutout of the season and the sixth of his career. It improved his Goals Against Average to 3.01 and his Save Percentage to .897.

The Flyers haven’t allowed nine goals in a game since October 2011.

Jacob Trouba scored his first goal in 20 games. He has had some slow goal scoring starts in the past with three seasons when he didn’t score until the 16th, 17th and 19th game of he season.

Pavel Buchnevich’s four points were a career high.  Both he and Zibanejad had a plus/minus of +5.

Travis Sanheim and Philippe Myers were each minus six on the night.

This was the Rangers first win on national television this season. They had gone 0-5-1 in their first six games.

The Rangers rolled four lines the whole game. Zibanejad led all forwards with 18:23 minutes of ice time.  Adam Fox was given a lighter load, playing only 18:49.  Brendan Smith led all defenders in ice time with 22:01 minutes.

The kid line got onto the scoresheet with Chytil’s goal and an assist for Lafrenière.  Kakko was scoreless, but he hit a crossbar just before the end of the first period.

  • If Knoblauch is needed to coach the game Friday night, it’s a question of who will coach the Wolf Pack who play the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at 1pm on Thursday in Bridgeport.  It’s possible that Quinn and his coaches will know if he can make the trip by Thursday morning.
In their postgame interviews, Georgiev, Buchnevich and Zibanejad seemed to indicate that the coaching change didn’t really affect them.
  • Though the NHL doesn’t officially announce if players are off the COVID list until 5pm, Buchnevich said he knew by the morning that he was going to be able to play.  Any COVID testing is done by the team’s medical staff so they will know what a player’s (or coach’s) status is before they have to notify the NHL.
