A 5-3 win that was closer than it needed to be

One thing about the New York Rangers is they usually don’t make it easy.  While there may be the occasional 9-0 laugher, there are too many games like the one they played against the Sabres on Monday.  Five minutes into the second period, they were losing 1-0 to the worst team in the NHL and the fanbase was nearly hysterical.

There was one subtle change in the lineup and it paid off immediately.  Kaapo Kakko found himself playing on the right side of Ryan Strome and Artemi Panarin and the newly formed line scored to restore sanity to the Rangers universe.

They took a 3-1 lead into the third period and allowed two quick goals by the Sabres (cue the hysteria), but the power play came through and the Rangers escaped with a 5-3 win.

Kris Knoblauch has been bending over backwards to acknowledge that he is following David Quinn’s game. He said that they had discussed juggling the lines to get Kakko more ice time, “We actually planned this before the game, giving him some extra ice time when the opportunity arises…but ultimately it was mostly Kaapo.  His play made determined us making that switch, he deserved it.”   Still, it had to be Knoblauch’s call to make that change and he did it at the right time.

Kakko was also on the ice in the waning moments and was able to score the empty net goal.  Keeping Kakko on the ice in that situation was something that has rarely, if ever happened when Quinn was behind the bench.

Despite the difficulties in getting past the Sabres, there were a number of positive takeaways from this game.  The power play won the game for the Blueshirts on two goals from Chris Kreider.  Keith Kinkaid made some game saving saves in the first two periods. Adam Fox was spectacular in his 100th NHL game. Artemi Panarin had three assists.  Kakko broke a long goal-less schneid with two scores.

The Rangers have now gotten points in five of their last six games including four wins.  They are two points behind fifth place Philadelphia and four points out of a playoff spot.  They have three tough road games coming up against the Flyers and Capitals.  This is the stretch of games that will tell the tale of this Rangers’ season.

Here is a full video recap of the game.

Notes on the Game

The game got off to a bad start for the Sabres when starting goalie Carter Hutton was injured in a goal mouth collision with Julien Gauthier.  He had to leave the game and was replaced by Dustin Tokarski who had been called up from the AHL earlier in the day.  Tokarski made his first NHL appearance since October 2016.

For a while it looked like the story of a back-up goalie stymieing the Rangers. Tokarski made some fantastic stops and kept the Sabres in the game early.    Tokarski had been in the Rangers system, playing 21 games in Hartford two seasons ago.  He ended up making 33 saves.

Keith Kinkaid faced only 19 shots and allowed three goals, but he made a series of crucial saves in the first period and again in the second.

He improved his record to 3-1-1 in five start.

For Kaapo Kakko, the two goals ended a 19 game goal drought.  That tied his longest drought last season.

It was surprising to see Kakko on the ice as the game wound down and it paid off with the first empty net goal of his career.

He looked almost sheepish scoring that goal.

The Strome-Kakko-Panarin line had 18 shots on goal, six each.  That was one fewer than the entire Sabres team.

Knoblauch said that moving Blackwell to the fourth third line was partially due to the need to have him on the penalty kill with Brett Howden out due to the COVID protocol.

The power play got healthy in a hurry and just in time. The Rangers were two for three and one goal was scored with a two man advantage.  It was the third 5v3 this season and the first time they have scored.

This was the third time they have scored two power play goals in one game and first time since February 24.  It was the first time they scored two PP goals and won.

Two more penalties killed by the Ranger and that means they have killed 69 of their last 75 penalties.

Artemi Panarin (20:26) and Mika Zibanejad (21:33) led all forward in ice time.  Adam Fox (24:14) led all Rangers with K’Andre Miller second at 23:33.

Jeff Skinner had a game against the Rangers that brought back memories of when he was with the Hurricanes and tormented the Blueshirts. He scored on a breakaway, had six shots and hit one crossbar.

Chris Kreider’s two power play goals gives him eight on the season, third most in the NHL.   He has the most PP goals of any player in the East Division.

He is one away from tying his career high of nine power play goals, set last season.

Kreider’s 16 goals is tied for sixth most this season in the NHL and it is the most in the East.  He is scoring at a 0.52 goals per game rate, the best of his career.  Before this season, his best was in 2019-20 when he scored 0.38 goals per game.  In a full 82 game season, at this rate he would end up with 42 goals.

For Adam Fox, this was the second three point game of his career. He had three assists in a game in January 2020 against Calgary.  His goal came after he led a rush out of the Rangers zone.<

For Artemi Panarin, this was the second three assists game of the season. Last year he did it five times.

My 3 stars of the game

  1. Adam Fox added another brilliant performance to a season of brilliant performances.  Besides leading all skaters in ice time, he scored a goal and assisted on two others.  He marked his 100th NHL game in grand style.
  2. Chris Kreider may have scored two “garbage goals” but that is what he is best at and they came at a crucial time. He’s having his best scoring season in his career.  Critics say that he produced the most against bad team, but in this case it got the Rangers a win.
  3. Kaapo Kakko finished the game with six shots and two goals, but it was the timing of the first goal that was significant.  Trailing 1-0 in the second period, the Rangers desperately needed a goal and Kakko got it.  After the game he said that his job was to go to the net and let Strome and Panarin get him the puck.  That’s what he did and it paid off.

The official 3 stars

  3. Artemi Panarin
