My 3 Rangers stars of the game

  1. Igor Shesterkin gets the first star for an outstanding effort en route to his first NHL shutout.  The Devils had 56 shot attempts including six high danger chances. Ironically, he 27 shots he faced were the  fewest he has faced in his last five starts.
  2. Jacob Trouba gets the second star for his play on the ice and his leadership off the ice.  Ad mentioned earlier, Trouba kicked Quinn out of the locker room after the second period and addressed the team.  Whatever he said worked as they played a much better final stanza.  On the ice, Trouba led all skaters in ice time, was credited with three blocked shots and four hits (though it looked like more).   He had one shot on goal and hit a crossbar. He was a physical force in this game and a big reason for the shutout.
  3. As important as Panarin’s goal was in the third period, Mika Zibanejad gets the third star for his game winning goal in the first period.  The Rangers had numerous scoring opportunities int the first period, but kept missing the net.  It took Zibanejad’s breakaway goal to give the Blueshirts the lead, a crucial first goal in this kind of game.

The official 3 stars

  2. Mika Zibanejad
  3. Artemi Panarin

The Sabres tried to help the Rangers, but couldn’t win the shootout so the Bluehsirts remains four points behind Boston.  The Flyers lost and are now alone in sixth place, two points behind the Rangers.
