What happened on May 10 in the history of the New York Rangers

On this date in 2013, the Washington Capitals beat the New York Rangers,  2-1, on an overtime goal by Mike Ribeiro, giving the Caps a 3-2 lead in their Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals series.  What made this notable was that Ribeiro’s goal was the last one scored by the Capitals in this series and they were shut out in the last two games as the Rangers won the series in seven games.

In this game, the Rangers scored just 53 seconds into the game on a goal by Brian Boyle. That was the last goal of the game for New York as the Capitals tied the score on a goal by Joel Ward in the second period.

Ribeiro’s goal came at 9:24 of overtime when Karl Alzner’s point shot hit Ranger defenseman Anton Stralman in the skate and bounced to Ribeiro who had a wide open net. It took an incredibly lucky bounce to beat Henrik Lundqvist who had 33 saves in the game.  The Verizon Center crowd went wild as the team mobbed Ribeiro.

That was it for the Capitals who were shut out the rest of the way by the Vezina Trophy winner, 1-0 in Game Six and 5-0 in Game Seven.

Today’s birthdays

19 NHL players have been born on May 10 with two of them, former Rangers.

Ab DeMarco was born on this date in 1916 in North Bay, Ontario.  He played seven seasons in the NHL including four with the Rangers from 1943-47.  The center was the team’s leading goal scorer for two season.  DeMarco is best known for his overtime goal in the 1943  playoffs for the Bruins that eliminated the Canadiens.  The Bruins would not beat the Habs in a playoff series for another 45 years.  He was also the father of Ab DeMarco Jr., a defenseman who played for the Rangers in the early 1970’s.

Pete Babando was born on May10, 1925 in Braeburn, Pennsylvania . He was a six-year NHL player who spent most of his career in Boston and Chicago. The left winger played part of one season for the Rangers scoring four goals in 29 games in 1953.  Ranger fans remember him for scoring the double overtime goal against the Rangers in Game Seven of the 1950 Stanley Cup Final. It clinched the Cup for the Detroit Red Wings in a series that saw the Blueshirts play no games in New York because the circus had taken over Madison Square Garden.
