There are many former players that return to their former teams. The New York Rangers brought back one of its former employees too as they have announced the re-signing of Jimmy Vesey on a league minimum deal. That is $750,000 for the year that will give him a chance to prove his success with the team he has been most successful with to this point in his career.

Vesey is not the young kid he was when he first signed with the Rangers coming off of his Hobey Baker-winning year with Harvard in the NCAA. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen that version of Jimmy Vesey, but that doesn’t mean that this Jimmy Vesey cannot get back to being a good support player for a team that desperately needs help in its supporting positions.

As a natural right-winger, Vesey is going to be able to help the depth of the team from the very start of his time back in the Big Apple. He is an older version of himself and much more experienced. In his experience, it is fair to expect the Boston native to come back to New York and offer a little more than he did during his first stint. Vesey isn’t the fresh-faced college kid he was many moons ago.

At almost 30 years of age, Vesey is what he is. There’s no getting around that. He’ll be trying to get back to the player he was when the rangers originally signed the winger out of college. That plucky young kid became a strong player in New York, and though he was nothing more than a depth piece, perhaps he can be a depth piece with the team that has been remodeled while he has been touring the rest of the league.

New York’s right wing is not as strong as it should be and there is a lot of hope that Vesey returning to the Rangers will fix a hole in the roster that has been there throughout this rebuild. It’s unlikely he will jump onto the top line and put up 100 points, but 30-40 points from Vesey at this stage of his career in a middle-six role would be a good addition from the New York Rangers management.

Next. A letter to New York Rangers fans. dark
