In an incredibly eventful game, the New York Rangers showed both the highest highs and lowest lows of this roster. The flaws were evident and the talent was abundant. Throughout this game, this looked like both the Rangers’ best and worst game of the year. Yet that was not enough as the New York Rangers would lose in overtime. The inconsistencies of the Rangers would cost them a point that they thoroughly deserved in this one.

During the first period, this was a game that the Rangers looked like the Rangers of last season. Outshooting the Senators heavily despite Filip Chytil being called for a double-minor early in this game. New York’s first period was incredible. Terrifying in all three zones, the roster looked deep for the first time in a while and it was a welcome change from the status quo. That first period was pristine.

As soon as the puck dropped for the second, the Hartford Wolf Pack would not have done any worse during that middle frame. Igor Shesterkin was spectacular, despite needing help from his defensemen at times during this game. Even getting a little help from the video coach as the Rangers successfully challenged an offsides goal that would be chalked out, Shesterkin couldn’t preserve the lead.

Letting Ottawa tie the game with less than a minute left in the third period was the nail in the coffin. Brady Tkachuk tipped the puck in the slot through the Rangers’ defensemen and Shesterkin had no answer to it. Despite all the good that the Rangers had, they lost this game. They are in a lot of trouble now and they need to figure out how to show some form of consistency.

One major positive from this game was Vitali Kravtsov. Ignoring his goal, this was a big game for him. He was generating chances, he was driving play, and that line with him, Chytil, and Artemi Panarin looked good. They were the best line for the team in this disappointing result. Hopefully, the coaching staff will let them build together and allow the Rangers to try and develop some sort of depth.

This overtime loss leaves New York outside of the playoff places on points percentage. While that may not seem like a big deal, the Blueshirts have played 3 games more than the Detroit Red Wings who currently sit in that top spot in the division. If Gallant’s men are able to get into the playoff places and displace another original six Franchise, they are going to need to find some form of consistency.

Sam Rosen was not able to call this game as he was sitting at home. Kenny Albert filled in alongside Joe Micheletti for this one. I wanted to take this time to wish the best of health to the voice of Rangers hockey. Everyone knows how iconic Sam Rosen has been for the Blueshirts as they have expanded their brand over the years. Hopefully, Rosen will be back to call the Rangers’ games soon.
