3) Jon Merrill
The Rangers did extensive work on retooling their defense core this offseason. From the moves made at the trade deadline to the signings of Vladislav Gavrikov and the trades of K'Andre Miller, Drury has conducted a complete overhaul. However, there may still be some work to be done, especially on the bottom pairing, which is where Jon Merrill can provide the most value.
Similar to Glendening, Merrill does not do much on the offensive side. In 70 games with the Wild last season, he posted two goals and four assists for six points. Merrill is one of the more versatile and physical defensemen in the league. While Merrill is primarily used as a left-handed defenseman, he can play with his off-hand. He's also able to use his 6' 3" 195-pound frame to shut down the opposing team's offensive chances and be a pest on the ice.
One of the main focuses for Drury since taking over as General Manager back in 2021 has been making the team more physical. To have a team that does not get pushed around and bully other teams to win the game. If the Rangers feel that Scott Marlow needs time in Hartford to develop, Merrill can be a spot holder until he's ready, while not being a blackhole on the roster.
